These data are recorded by a Davis Instruments VantagePro weather station at IPST's headquarters in downtown Bangkok. The most striking feature of the insolation values is how low they are relative to a simple "clear sky" model of insolation. The source of this discrepancy is unknown, but is probably a combination of instrument calibration and poor air quality in Bangkok, which blocks sunlight from reaching the surface. Smoke from agricultural burning in southeast Asia is a major contributor to these air quality problems, and air quality is worse in Bangkok, as is true of large densely populated urban areas around the world. The Bangkok Planetarium is visible in the IPST site image from Google Earth and, yes, that really is an airplane -- a DC-3 on display at the Science Center.
